San Diego - Fun things to do and little known facts

A vacation is a highly valued time in the life of many people, regardless of where they live. Most vacationers seek out travel opportunities that will take them to pleasant locations with a wide variety of things to do. With its incredibly warm climate, beautiful scenery, and stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, the city of San Diego has long been one of the top vacation destinations in Southern California.

1.Through 2008 NO Super Bowl in San Diego

Through the year 2008, San Diego is the largest city in the United States to have never had a Super Bowl winning National Football League team.  The San Diego Chargers won a championship while playing in the American Football League which would eventually merge with the NFL and the team appeared in the Super Bowl following the 1994 season only to lose to the San Francisco 49ers.

2. Largest Shipyard on America's West Coast

San Diego's National Steel and Shipbuilding Company is the largest shipyard on America's West Coast.  The shipyard's main activity is building oceangoing cargo vessels, although it has produced ships for the United States Navy since the early 1960s as well.

3. San Diego Natural History Museum - Oldest Scientific Institution

The San Diego Natural History Museum, located in the world famous Balboa Park, is the oldest scientific institution in Southern California.  It is also the third oldest scientific institution west of the Mississippi River.  Interestingly, the museum site was nearly completely emptied and used as a military hospital during World War II.

4. Port of San Diego - Primary entry point for Foreign Cars

The Port of San Diego is the primary port of entry for a number of foreign car companies shipping their vehicles to America.  These include Acura, Honda, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Volkswagen, and more.

5. San Diego Airport - Busiest Commercial Airport in the United States

San Diego International Airport, located just three miles from the city's business district, is the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the entire United States of America.  There have been numerous studies and proposals undertaken in an effort to relocate the airport to a more spacious area or farther away from the residential and business communities dating as far back as the 1920s shortly after the airfield was built, but through 2009 none have been successful.

The history of San Diego is fascinating and there are a number of places in the city that speak of it well.  The city has a fine selection of museums, art galleries, libraries, and historical sites and landmarks available for both locals and out-of-towners alike to visit and experience.  San Diego is a beautiful city, placed right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, and it is easy to see why it attracts a large number of visitors each and every year.

Sporting Events

Though known more for its warm weather, shopping opportunities, tourist attractions, and beach experiences, San Diego has a lively sports life as well.  The city is represented in Major League Baseball by the San Diego Padres who began play in 1969 as an expansion team.  Pro football games are also available in the city thanks to the San Diego Chargers who have played their games their since 1961.  There are a number of other great chances to watch team sports too including rugby and soccer.  The sports teams of the local colleges are also popular, including the San Diego State Aztecs.

Covering more than 1,200 acres, San Diego's Balboa Park is one of the largest urban parks in the entire United States.  Depending on which area they go to, the park offers visitors the chance to get away from crowds and enjoy some peaceful time in the city and also see some of the more popular attractions there as well.  Among the many attractions found within the boundaries of Balboa Park are the world famous San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Museum of Man, the city's Natural History Museum, the San Diego Art Institute, the park's Botanical Building, the Timken Museum of Art, and more.  There are also a number of fountains and gardent attractions in the park too.  The world's largest outdoor pipe organ can be found at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion and the Old Globe Theatre is a replica of Shakespeare's famous Globe Theatre in England.  Golfing, swimming, biking, baseball, tennis, archery, and disc golf are also available to those seeking outdoor recreation possibilities.  Located just off the park grounds is the extremely popular San Diego Air & Space Museum.  It is very easy to spend multiple days at Balboa Park and be thoroughly entertained.

USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway served the United States bravely as an aircraft carrier during both wartime and peacetime.  The ship saw extensive service in both the Vietnam War as well as in Operation Desert Storm.  Both the first and last enemy aircraft downed during the Vietnam War are credited to aviators flying from the USS Midway.  Docked today at the Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego, the USS Midway offers one of the most unique experiences for those interested in either American history or more specifically military history.  The majority of the ship is accessible to museum-goers and the chance to walk the decks of a true World War II era aircraft carrier is something that should not be missed.  Its easy to see why the USS Midway Museum continues to be one of the most popular attractions in San Diego.

San Diego's SeaWorld attraction is one of the more popular destinations in the city.  SeaWorld is a fun activity for the entire family, but children seem to especially love and cherish their memories of a visit here.  The facility offers both the opportunity to view several ocean living species in captivity as well as through their popular live shows too.  Many exhibits and shows at SeaWorld are highly interactive and encourage audience participation.


Mission Beach
When it is time to get away from downtown life, the restrictiveness of a hotel room, or crowded tourist attractions, there is no better San Diego activity than heading to the beach.  Mission Beach is one of the main beaches in San Diego area and has attracted those seeking the sun, sand, and surf for more than one hundred years.  Besides offering the typical beach activities of sunbathing and playing in the ocean water, the area offers a number of other activities including beach volleyball, basketball, beach softball, surfing, horseshoes, bicycling, and skateboarding.  Also in the area are the famous Mission Beach Rollercoaster as well as a number of popular bars and eating establishments, the entertainment opportunities provided by the nightlife surrounding San Diego's Mission Beach are plentiful.

It is often overused when speaking about places to travel to, but San Diego really does offer something for everyone.  Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the ocean, the beaches and the cliff sides that surround the city.  Cultural and history enthusiasts will love the chance to visit the many museums and art galleries that the city has to offer, as well as the opportunity to see first hand a number of actual historical sites that sit within the city's boundaries.
