Five Fun Facts You May Not Know About Disneyland

Disneyland has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States for more than fifty years, and with good reason. The park has the ability to provide a fun time for both children and, to the surprise of many, adults too. Some of the best family vacations in many peoples memories are their group vacation to Disneyland. It is quite obviously one of the most famous destinations in the world, but here are five fun facts you may not know about Disneyland.

1.  Before construction of Disneyland was even finished two new lanes were added to Interstate 5 (U.S. Route 101 at the time) in anticipation of the added traffic that the park would attract.

2.  During the height of the cold war in late 1959, Soviet Premier Nikita Krushchev visited the United States.  In a public statement he stated that one of his wishes was to visit Disneyland.  This visit never happened, largely because of security concerns.  This led Krushchev to wonder publicly if the United States government had hidden missiles or other secret weapons there as a cover.

3.  When Disneyland opened in 1955 it had five themed areas:  Main Street USA, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland.  The first themed area added to Disneyland after it was open to the public was New Orleans Square, which opened in 1966.

4.  To help with construction costs of the Disneyland Railroad that encircles the park, for its first two decades it was known as the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad, and was sponsored by the Santa Fe Railway company.  This association ended in 1974 and it has since been known as just the Disneyland Railroad.

5.  One of the main forces behind modern rocketry and both the German and American rocket programs was well respected scientist Werner von Braun.  He was also one of Walt Disney's handpicked consultants when it came time to design and build Disneyland's Tommorowland which focuses on the future and space.

Travel to Disneyland, use a low fare airline like Southwest; in addition use southwest coupons for cheaper travel. Disneyland offers the type of family vacation that many other places cannot even compete with. Over the years it has evolved and changed with the times so that it is always current and relevant to the young children that come its way, but it also stays largely the same so as to be appropriately nostalgic to the parents and adults who remember the Disney products and characters of their youth. A visit to Disneyland is a great way to create memories that will last a lifetime.
